About the plant

Senna Alexandrina (Alexandrian senna) is an ornamental plant in the genus Senna. It is used in herbalism. It grows natively in upper Egypt, especially in the Nubian region, and near Khartoum (Sudan), where it is cultivated commercially. It is also grown elsewhere, notably in India and Somalia. Alexandrian Senna is a shrubby plant that reaches 0.5–1, rarely two, metres in height with a branched, pale-green erect stem and long spreading branches bearing four or five pairs of leaves. The flowers are in a raceme interior blossoms, big in size, coloured yellow that tends to brown. Its legume fruit are horned, broadly oblong, compressed and flat and contain about six seeds. Senna alexandrina is also known under the names Egyptian senna, Tinnevelly senna, East Indian senna.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

This is a stimulant laxative herb. Do not use for more than one week without medical supervision; prolonged use can cause dependence, electrolyte loss and potassium depletion. Do not use if you have abdominal pain of unknown cause, nausea, vomiting, intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease or appendicitis, and do not give it to children under 12. Stop use and seek advice if you experience rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after use.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
