A single-herb liquid extract of dried herb of Leonurus cardiaca, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Motherwort is a rangy square-stemmed mint that reaches a metre and a half on European roadsides and waste ground. Its lower leaves are cut into three sharp-toothed lobes with a fan of veins, which is what the name Leonurus refers to — a lion's tail, or in other tellings a lion's paw. The small pink two-lipped flowers sit in tight whorls at the leaf joints all the way up the stem, and each one is backed by a calyx of five stiff spines that catch on clothing when you brush past. It is extremely bitter.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use in pregnancy — motherwort stimulates the uterus. Do not use with sedatives or heart-rhythm medication without medical advice.

Reported interactions: Major Interaction with Sedative medications (CNS depressants): Motherwort as well as sedative medications can cause tiredness and somnolence. Concurrent using of the motherwort and sedative medications such as clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others can be the reason of a strong feeling of sleepiness. Do not use this combination.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
