A single-herb liquid extract of dried roots of Paeonia lactiflora, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

White peony is the herbaceous peony of Chinese gardens and the ancestor of most of the garden hybrids grown in the West, a perennial of grassy slopes and scrub in northern China, Mongolia and Siberia with divided leaves and large single white or pink bowls of flower. The root is dug in the fourth or fifth autumn, and for bai shao it is boiled and the brown outer skin scraped away before drying, which is what leaves it pale — that peeling is the difference between bai shao and chi shao, which is left unpeeled.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use in pregnancy. White peony may add to the effect of anticoagulants.
