A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaves of Agathosma betulina, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Buchu is a small heath-like shrub of the Cape fynbos in South Africa, restricted to a few mountain ranges of the Western Cape. The leaves are stiff, rounded and edged with fine teeth, and held up to the light they are peppered with translucent oil glands; rubbed between the fingers they give off a striking smell somewhere between blackcurrant and peppermint. That smell is the reason for buchu brandy, which is a fixture of Cape country households. Wild harvesting is permit-controlled and most commercial material is now cultivated.

Tincture: Agathosma betulina dried leaves, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Agathosma betulina dried leaves, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Buchu is a urinary irritant in quantity and is not for use in pregnancy or in kidney disease; keep to short courses. It may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines. Round-leaf buchu (Agathosma betulina) is the material accepted for use — the oval-leaf species A. crenulata is much higher in pulegone and is not interchangeable with it.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
