A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Berberis vulgaris, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Barberry is a thorny deciduous shrub of European hedgerows and rocky slopes, with small oval leaves finely toothed like a saw, hanging clusters of yellow flowers, and long oval scarlet berries. Its wood and root bark are a strong chrome yellow inside, from berberine, and were used for dyeing wool and leather. It has a complicated history in farming: the fungus that causes black stem rust of wheat needs barberry to complete its life cycle, and eradication campaigns tore it out of the hedges of Europe and North America for two centuries.

Tincture: Berberis vulgaris dried root, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Berberis vulgaris dried root, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

This herb contains berberine. Do not use during pregnancy — berberine can stimulate the uterus — and do not give it to newborns or infants, in whom it can displace bilirubin and cause kernicterus. Berberine interacts with a wide range of medicines, including ciclosporin, metformin and many drugs cleared by the liver; check with a practitioner before combining it with anything.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
