About the plant

Chinese goldthread is a small woodland perennial of the mountain forests of central and southern China, with glossy divided evergreen leaves and small greenish-white flowers held on wiry stalks. Underground it makes a cluster of short knotted rhizomes that are a vivid chrome-yellow inside — that colour is berberine, and it is the reason both for the name goldthread and for the herb's standing. It is slow, taking five or six years to reach a harvestable size, and is now grown under shade rather than dug from the wild.

Glycerite: Coptis chinensis dried root, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

This herb contains berberine. Do not use during pregnancy — berberine can stimulate the uterus — and do not give it to newborns or infants, in whom it can displace bilirubin and cause kernicterus. Berberine interacts with a wide range of medicines, including ciclosporin, metformin and many drugs cleared by the liver; check with a practitioner before combining it with anything.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
