A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Veronicastrum virginicum, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Culver's root is a tall prairie and open-woodland perennial of eastern North America, unmistakable in flower: the leaves are set in neat whorls all the way up an unbranched stem, and the top carries several slender white spikes held up like candles. The name belongs to a Dr Culver, practising somewhere in the American colonies in the late 1600s, about whom essentially nothing else is known. The root has to be aged before use — see the warnings.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Culver’s root must be aged before use. The fresh root is a violent purgative and emetic; only root that has been dried for at least a year is fit for use. Do not use it if you have abdominal pain of unknown cause, intestinal obstruction or inflammatory bowel disease. Not for use in pregnancy, and not for children.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
