About the plant

Da xue teng means great blood vine, and the name is literal: cut a stem and the exposed wood weeps a reddish sap that darkens as it dries, and a clean cross-section shows red-brown rays radiating out through paler wood in a pattern like a flower. It is a big woody climber of Chinese hill forest, the only species in its genus, and the stems are cut into thick slices while fresh.

Suggested use

For external use in cosmetic and topical preparations. Shake well before use. Blend into a carrier oil, balm, salve, cream or soap base at the rate your formulation calls for. Patch-test on a small area of intact skin and wait 24 hours before wider use.
