A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Harpagophytum procumbens, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Devil's claw is a low creeper of the Kalahari sands of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, sending prostrate stems out from a deep primary tuber with large trumpet-shaped mauve flowers. What is collected is not that primary tuber but the secondary ones — fist-sized storage swellings that form along the lateral roots — because the plant survives if the main tuber is left in the ground. The fruit is what gives it the name: a woody capsule covered in long curved arms tipped with vicious anchor hooks, which catch in the mouths and feet of grazing animals.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or gallstones — devil's claw increases stomach acid and bile flow. It may add to the effect of anticoagulants and of heart-rhythm and blood-pressure medication, and may lower blood sugar. Not for use in pregnancy.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
