A single-herb liquid extract of dried roots of Hydrastis canadensis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Goldenseal is a small woodland perennial of the eastern North American hardwood forest. A mature plant sends up one hairy stem carrying two large palmately lobed leaves and, between them, a single greenish-white flower with no petals at all — just a burst of stamens — followed by a red fruit that looks like a raspberry. Underground is a knotty, twisted rhizome that is bright chrome-yellow inside; the Cherokee used it as a dye for cloth and skin. It is slow to reproduce and has been dug hard for over a century, so it is listed on CITES Appendix II and on the United Plant Savers at-risk list.

Tincture: Hydrastis canadensis dried roots, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Hydrastis canadensis dried roots, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Berberine again: do not use during pregnancy, and do not give it to newborns or infants, in whom it can displace bilirubin. Goldenseal is also CITES Appendix II listed and on the United Plant Savers at-risk list — we buy cultivated root wherever it exists.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
