A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaf of Vinca major (greater periwinkle), extracted under precise temperature control in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite. It is meant to be taken in small amounts: the label limits it to 0.5 ml a day, and the warnings below are longer than on most of our extracts. Please read them before you order.

About the plant

Greater periwinkle is a low, trailing evergreen of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae), native to central and southern Europe and widely planted elsewhere as ground cover; in parts of North America it has escaped into woodland. Its stems root where they touch the ground and carry pairs of small, glossy, dark green elliptic leaves, and single blue-violet five-petalled flowers open in the leaf axils in spring. The leaf contains indole alkaloids, chief among them vincamine, in amounts that vary widely from one harvest to the next. Two other plants share the common name and should not be confused with it: greater periwinkle (Vinca major), a larger relative, and Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus), a different genus and the source of the drug alkaloids vincristine and vinblastine.

Glycerite: Vinca major dried leaf (organic raw material). Other ingredients (menstruum): vegetable glycerin USP (70%), water (30%).

Made with our proprietary ratio as a full-spectrum botanical extract. No added sugar. Contains no artificial ingredients, colour additives, fillers or binders.

Suggested use

Shake well. Use only as directed by your healthcare practitioner: up to 0.5 ml (about 15 drops) in water, no more than 0.5 ml per day. For adults 18 and over only. Stop if side effects occur.

Warnings

Greater Periwinkle leaf contains vincamine and related alkaloids that can lower blood pressure. Take no more than 0.5 ml a day, and only with the guidance of a healthcare practitioner. Side effects reported for greater periwinkle and its alkaloids include flushing, low blood pressure with dizziness or fainting, headache, sleep problems, skin rash and stomach upset. In animal studies reviewed by Germany’s Commission E, greater periwinkle herb lowered white blood cell and lymphocyte counts; long-term safety in people has not been established.

Warning: For adult use under professional supervision only. Do not use if pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive. Do not use if you have low blood pressure (hypotension), a heart rhythm disorder, or a brain tumor / increased intracranial pressure. Consult your physician before use, especially if taking blood pressure or heart medications, blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, or CNS depressants. Discontinue use and consult a doctor if dizziness, palpitations, nausea, GI discomfort, or any adverse reactions occur. Do not exceed recommended dose. Keep out of reach of children.
