A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaves of Gymnema sylvestre, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Gymnema is a woody climber of the dry forests of central and southern India and tropical Africa, with soft opposite leaves and small yellow bell flowers. It does one thing no other common herb does: chew a leaf and for the next hour or so sweetness disappears entirely from your sense of taste. Sugar becomes gritty sand and honey tastes of nothing much, while salt, sour and bitter are untouched. Gymnemic acid blocks the sweet receptor on the tongue. The Hindi name, gurmar, means sugar destroyer.

Glycerite: Gymnema sylvestre dried leaves, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Gymnema lowers blood sugar. If you take insulin or any diabetes medication, monitor closely and speak to your doctor before use. Not for use in pregnancy. It blocks the taste of sweetness for an hour or so after taking it, which is expected.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
