About the plant

He shou wu is the prepared root of a vigorous Chinese climbing knotweed with heart-shaped leaves and sprays of small white flowers. Prepared is the operative word: the raw root is stewed for hours with black soybean juice and then dried, sometimes repeatedly, which turns it from pale brown to near-black and changes its character entirely. The Chinese name means black-haired Mister He, after a man in an old story whose hair was said to have darkened again in old age; it is one of the few herbs named after a person rather than a place or a property.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

He Shou Wu has been associated with liver injury. Cases of hepatitis and liver failure have been reported and several countries restrict its sale. Do not use if you have liver disease or take medication that affects the liver. Stop use and seek medical advice if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual fatigue or abdominal pain.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
