A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Paeonia lactiflora, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Bai shao is white peony root, and the whiteness is a processing step rather than a variety. The root is lifted in the fourth or fifth autumn, boiled, and the brown outer skin scraped off while it is still hot, then dried; what is left is smooth, hard, and pale ivory, and it snaps with a clean face. Left unpeeled and dried raw, the same root becomes chi shao, which is treated as a different drug entirely.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use in pregnancy. White peony may add to the effect of anticoagulants.
