About the plant

Great burnet carries small oblong heads of very dark crimson flowers on wiry branching stems, held well above a base of pinnate leaves with neatly toothed oval leaflets, so a stand of it in a damp meadow looks like a scattering of dark beads on stalks. The genus name means blood-absorber and refers to the old use of the tannin-rich root as a styptic. That root is dark brown outside and reddish inside.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

High in tannins; leave a gap either side of any medication or iron supplement. Not for use in pregnancy.
