About the plant

Chocolate vine earns the name honestly: the flowers really do smell of chocolate and vanilla, faintly but unmistakably, on a warm spring day. Male and female flowers sit on the same drooping raceme, the females larger and a deeper purple-brown. The leaves are divided into five leaflets. Cut a stem across and it shows a neat wheel of radiating spokes. It is a vigorous climber, and in the eastern United States it has become an invasive smothering vine.

Suggested use

Warnings

Species verification matters with this herb. Material traded under the Mu Tong name has historically been adulterated with Aristolochia, which causes irreversible kidney damage. This extract is made from the species named in the title; if you are sourcing this herb elsewhere, insist on species-verified material.
