About the plant

Leonurus cardiaca, known as Motherwort, is an herbaceous perennial plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Other common names include Throw-wort, Lion's ear, and Lion's tail. Leonurus cardiaca has a squarish stem which is clad in short hairs and is often purplish, especially near the nodes. The flowers are pink to lilac in colour often with furry lower lips. The plant grows to about 60 to 100 cm (24 to 39 in) in height and blooms during July and August. Motherwort has a long history of use as an herb in traditional medicine in Central Europe, Asia, and North America.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Reported interactions: Major Interaction with Sedative medications (CNS depressants): Motherwort as well as sedative medications can cause tiredness and somnolence. Concurrent using of the motherwort and sedative medications such as clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others can be the reason of a strong feeling of sleepiness. Do not use this combination.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
