A single-herb liquid extract of dried bark of Zanthoxylum clava-herculis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Southern prickly ash is armed in a way that is hard to forget: the trunk is studded all over with conical corky knobs, each one tipped with a stout spine, so an old tree looks warty and dangerous. Chew a fragment of the bark and the mouth goes numb and tingles within seconds — the same sanshool chemistry as Sichuan pepper, which is a close relative — and that is exactly why one of its common names is the toothache tree.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Prickly ash numbs the mouth, which is expected. Not for use in pregnancy. It may add to the effect of anticoagulants; stop use two weeks before surgery. Do not use if you have a stomach ulcer.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
