Trifolium pratense, the Red Clover, is a herbaceous species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae, native to Europe, Western Asia and northwest Africa, but planted and naturalised in many other regions. It is a herbaceous, short-lived perennial plant, variable in size, growing to 20–80 cm tall. The leaves are alternate, trifoliate (with three leaflets), each leaflet 15–30 mm long and 8–15 mm broad, green with a characteristic pale crescent in the outer half of the leaf; the petiole is 1–4 cm long, with two basal stipules that are abruptly narrowed to a bristle-like point. The flowers are dark pink with a paler base, 12–15 mm long, produced in a dense inflorescence, and are mostly visited by bumblebees.*

Drug Interactions:

Moderate Interaction with Birth control pills (Contraceptive drugs):

Some Contraceptive drugs include estrogen. Red clover can have of the same impact as estrogen. However, red clover’s effectiveness is not as strong as the estrogen’s one. Parallel taking of red clover and Contraceptive drugs such as ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (Triphasil), ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone (Ortho-Novum 1/35, Ortho-Novum 7/7/7), and others can lessen the power of birth control pills.

Moderate Interaction with Estrogens:

Huge doses of red clover can have the effects of estrogen. However, red clover’s effectiveness isn't as intensive as estrogen pills. Concurrent using of red clover and estrogen pills such as conjugated equine estrogens (Premarin), ethinyl estradiol, estradiol, and others can decline the power of estrogen pills.

Moderate Interaction with Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) substrates):

Such medications as amitriptyline (Elavil), haloperidol (Haldol), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), theophylline (Theo-Dur, others), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, others), and others are altered and destroyed by the liver. Red clover can lessen the process of breaking some medications down by the liver. Concurrent consumption of red clover and listed medications can intensify the effectiveness as well as side effects of these medications. Before taking red clover be sure to consult a doctor if you take any medications which changed by the liver.

Moderate Interaction with Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) substrates):

Such medications as omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), and pantoprazole (Protonix); diazepam (Valium); carisoprodol (Soma); nelfinavir (Viracept); and others are altered and destroyed by the liver. Red clover can lessen the process of breaking some medications down by the liver. Concurrent consumption of red clover and listed medications can intensify the effectiveness as well as side effects of these medications. Before taking red clover be sure to consult a doctor if you take any medications which changed by the liver.

Moderate Interaction with Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) substrates):

Such medications as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), and piroxicam (Feldene); celecoxib (Celebrex); amitriptyline (Elavil); warfarin (Coumadin); glipizide (Glucotrol); losartan (Cozaar); and others are altered and destroyed by the liver. Red clover can lessen the process of breaking some medications down by the liver. Concurrent consumption of red clover and listed medications can intensify the effectiveness as well as side effects of these medications. Before taking red clover be sure to consult a doctor if you take any medications which changed by the liver.

Moderate Interaction with Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrates):

Such medications as lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and many others are altered and destroyed by the liver. Red clover can lessen the process of breaking some medications down by the liver. Concurrent consumption of red clover and listed medications can intensify the effectiveness as well as side effects of these medications. Before taking red clover be sure to consult a doctor if you take any medications which changed by the liver.

Moderate Interaction with Medications that slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs):

Red clover can decelerate blood clotting. Simultaneous taking of red clover and antiplatelet medications such as aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others can strengthen the risks of bruising and bleeding. Before using, consult a doctor.

Moderate Interaction with Tamoxifen (Nolvadex):

Body hormones influence some types of cancer. Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) is used to cure and hinder the estrogen-sensitive cancer. Red clover can also have impact on estrogen levels in the organism. Contemporaneous taking of red clover and Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) can lower the efficacy of tamoxifen (Nolvadex). Do not take them together.
