A single-herb liquid extract of dried herb of Scutellaria lateriflora, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Skullcap is a slender North American wetland mint of marshes, wet meadows and stream banks, standing to about seventy centimetres with paired toothed leaves and small blue-violet flowers carried in one-sided racemes from the leaf axils — lateriflora, side-flowering. The name refers to the calyx, which after the flower falls carries a small raised flap on the upper side that was thought to resemble a helmet or skullcap. It is sometimes adulterated in trade with germander, which is a genuinely different and much more problematic plant.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Skullcap can cause drowsiness. Do not drive after taking it and do not combine it with alcohol or sedatives. Not for use in pregnancy. Material sold as skullcap has historically been adulterated with Teucrium, which is hepatotoxic — species-verified material matters here.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
