A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Trichosanthes kirilowii, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Tian hua fen means heavenly flower powder, and the name is about how it was made. The root of this Chinese climbing gourd is a large white starchy tuber; it was pounded in water, the fibre strained off, and the fine starch left to settle out and dry into a powder. The same vine gives gua lou, the orange fruit, from above ground. The plant climbs by tendrils and opens its fringed white flowers at dusk.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use in pregnancy under any circumstances. Trichosanthes root contains trichosanthin, a protein that has been used clinically to end pregnancy, and the root has a long record of use as an abortifacient. It may also lower blood sugar. Stop use and seek advice if you develop a rash, fever or swelling — allergic reactions to this plant protein are documented.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
