A single-herb liquid extract of dried tuber of Dioscorea villosa, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Wild yam is a twining vine of eastern North American woodland with heart-shaped leaves whose arching veins run from base to tip, and small greenish flowers followed by three-winged papery capsules. Its knobbly branching rhizome contains diosgenin, and that compound has a real place in industrial history: in the 1940s Russell Marker showed that steroid hormones could be synthesised from the diosgenin in Mexican Dioscorea, which is how the first cheap cortisone and the first oral contraceptive came to be made. Worth being clear that the conversion happens in a laboratory and not in a person: the plant itself contains no hormones.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Not for use in pregnancy. Wild yam contains no hormones and is not converted to any in the body; if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, speak to a practitioner before use.
