A single-herb liquid extract of dried roots of Smallanthus sonchifolius, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Yacon looks like a sweet potato and eats like a pear: crisp, wet, faintly sweet and refreshing raw. The sweetness is almost all inulin and other fructans, which human digestion cannot break down, so the tuber is sweet without being starchy. It is an Andean daisy relative, related to the sunflower, grown on the eastern slopes from Colombia to Argentina, and the tubers are traditionally left in the sun for a few days after lifting, which sweetens them further.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Yacon is high in fructans, which human digestion does not break down; in more than modest amounts it causes wind, bloating and loose stools. It may lower blood sugar — take care if you are on diabetes medication. Yacon belongs to the daisy family, so avoid it if you react to ragweed or chrysanthemums.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
