A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Polygala tenuifolia, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Yuan zhi is the root of a small Chinese milkwort of dry sandy slopes, a wiry plant with thread-fine leaves and small blue-purple flowers. Preparing it is a specific job: the root is soaked until the bark loosens, and the hard woody core is then pulled out and thrown away, leaving a hollow tube of root bark. Material sold with the core still in is a lower grade, and the difference is visible at a glance.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Do not exceed the suggested amount — yuan zhi is rich in saponins and causes nausea and vomiting above small doses. Do not use if you have a stomach ulcer or gastritis. Not for use in pregnancy.
