A single-herb liquid extract of dried plant material of Gelidiella acerosa, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Agar was discovered by accident in Japan in the seventeenth century, when surplus seaweed soup thrown out on a freezing night was found the next day to have frozen, thawed, drained and dried into a light solid that would gel again in hot water. Its second life began in 1881, when Fanny Hesse suggested it to Robert Koch's laboratory after gelatin plates kept melting in the summer; every bacteriology lab in the world has run on it since. This species is a stiff, wiry, dark red seaweed of tropical reef flats.

Ingredients

Tincture: Gelidiella acerosa, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Gelidiella acerosa, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Agar swells considerably in water. Take it with plenty of liquid, and do not use it if you have an intestinal obstruction or a narrowed oesophagus. It can slow the absorption of medicines taken at the same time — leave at least two hours between this and any prescription medicine. Seaweeds take up iodine: take advice first if you have a thyroid condition.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
