A single-herb liquid extract of dried herb of Ferula assa-foetida, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Asafoetida is the dried latex of a giant Iranian and Afghan umbellifer that grows to two metres with a huge fleshy taproot. The plant is cut down and the top of the root sliced across; a milky sap wells up, is scraped off as it hardens, and the cut is renewed again and again over months until the root is exhausted. Raw, the resin smells so strongly sulphurous that one English name for it is devil's dung. Cooked in hot fat for a few seconds it turns into something quite different, closer to fried onion and leek, which is how it is used across India as hing.

Tincture: Ferula assa-foetida dried herb, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Ferula assa-foetida dried herb, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for infants. Asafoetida can cause methaemoglobinaemia in babies. Not for use in pregnancy, and use caution if you have a bleeding disorder or take anticoagulants.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
