A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaves of Peumus boldus, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Boldo is Chilean and nothing else is quite like it: the only species in its genus, an evergreen tree of the coastal ranges and central valley with small hard leathery leaves whose upper surface is rough with raised warts. Crushed, they give off a strong camphorous smell with a bitter edge behind it. Leaves are gathered from wild trees, and an after-dinner infusion of boldo is a household fixture in Chile in a way it has never quite become anywhere else.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Boldo leaf contains ascaridole and is hard on the liver. Do not use it if you have liver disease, gallstones, a blocked bile duct or any obstruction of the biliary tract, and do not use it alongside medicines that affect the liver. Keep to short courses of no more than two to four weeks. Not for use in pregnancy. Boldo may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
