A single-herb liquid extract of dried tuber of Harpagophytum procumbens, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

This is the sun-dried grade, and the drying is not incidental. Devil's claw tubers come out of the Kalahari with a high moisture content and will mould within days, so harvesters slice them thin at the collection site and spread them on cloths in full sun, where they are dry in a couple of days. Slow or shaded drying costs harpagoside, the marker the trade grades on. The plant is a low trailing perennial whose hooked woody fruit gives it its name.

Glycerite: Harpagophytum procumbens dried tuber, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use in pregnancy. Devil’s claw stimulates gastric acid and is not suitable if you have stomach or duodenal ulcers or gallstones. It may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines and of medicines for blood pressure, blood sugar or heart rhythm — take advice first if you are on any of these.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
