A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaves of Annona muricata, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Graviola is a small evergreen tree of the Caribbean and Central America, seldom over nine metres, now grown throughout the wet tropics. Its flowers come straight out of the trunk and the older branches rather than the twigs — thick, yellow-green, three-cornered and rather solid-looking. The fruit that follows is enormous by comparison: a heart-shaped green syncarp up to three kilos, covered in soft curved spines, holding white fibrous flesh that is sharply acidic and strongly aromatic. That sourness is what gives it the name soursop, and it is why the fruit is turned into juice, sorbet and ice cream far more often than it is eaten fresh. This extract is made from the leaves.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Do not use graviola long-term or in large amounts. The leaves and fruit contain annonacin, which is toxic to nerve cells; long-term dietary exposure has been linked to an atypical parkinsonism in populations that consume it heavily. Do not use if you have Parkinson's disease or another movement disorder. Graviola may lower blood pressure and blood sugar — take care if you are on medication for either. Not for use in pregnancy.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
