LATIN NAME: Helianthus Annuus
ORIGIN: Sunflower originates from North America
DISTRIBUTION AREA: The plant is widespread in regions with a temperate, warm climate. Growing in favorable conditions, the plant gives a good harvest, has a powerful stem and rhizome.
BOTANICAL INFORMATION: Helianthus Annuus is an annual plant with an erect, ribbed, rough-haired stem with axillary lateral branches, reaching a height of 80-250 cm. This plant has a tap-root system, roots penetrate the soil to a depth of 3 m in search of moisture. Large, heart-shaped or egg-shaped, dentate leaves with an acuminate tip are placed alternately. Flowers from light yellow to golden color are collected in a large, up to 50 cm in diameter basket-inflorescence, which has the ability to turn to the sun (only young plants turn the inflorescence to the sun). Fruits are oblong ovoid seeds of black, gray or white color with stripes.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: Leaves and flowers of sunflower contain flavonoid quercimemerin, sterols (sitosteroline glycoside), scopoline coumarin glycoside, up to 0.6% of rubber, choline, saponins, carotenoids (cryptoxanthin, β-carotene, taraxanthin), anthocyanins, phenol-carboxylic acids (chlorogenic, caffeic, neochlorogenic). Seeds contain fatty oil (up to 50–52%), proteins (up to 20%), carbohydrates (up to 23%), carotenoids, sterols, phospholipids, PP and E vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially linoleic), lecithin, tannins.
Sunflower extract comes from the seed or petals powder of the sunflower.
