A single-herb liquid extract of dried roots of Armoracia rusticana, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

An intact horseradish root smells of almost nothing. The pungency is manufactured on the spot: cutting or grating ruptures the cells and brings together a stored glucosinolate and the enzyme that splits it, and within seconds the result is allyl isothiocyanate, the same volatile compound that carries the heat of mustard and wasabi. It peaks in a couple of minutes and then fades, which is why grated horseradish is stabilised with vinegar. The plant itself is a coarse brassica with metre-long dock-like leaves that almost never sets viable seed in cultivation and is propagated instead from root cuttings.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Horseradish is a strong mucous-membrane irritant. Concentrated preparations can burn the mouth, throat and stomach lining and can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea; always take it well diluted. Not for use if you have stomach or duodenal ulcers, and not for children under 4. Horseradish belongs to the brassica family and contains goitrogenic compounds — take advice first if you have a thyroid condition or are on thyroid medication.

Reported interactions: Moderate Interaction with Levothyroxine: Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It provides more thyroid hormone. Horseradish can lower the quantity of thyroid hormones. Simultaneous consumption of horseradish and medications included levothyroxine (such as  Armour Thyroid, Eltroxin, Estre, Euthyrox, Levo-T, Levothroid, Levoxyl, Synthroid, Unithroid, and others) can bring down the effectiveness of levothyroxine.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
