A single-herb liquid extract of dried fruits of Capsicum annuum, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Cayenne is one of the many cultivated forms of a single species that was domesticated in Mexico several thousand years ago and now covers everything from a bell pepper to a jalapeno. This is the long, slim, tapering hot form, dried and ground. The heat is capsaicin, made in the pale spongy placenta the seeds are attached to rather than in the seeds themselves, and it binds the same nerve receptor that senses actual heat — which is why the brain reports burning when nothing is burning.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Cayenne is a strong irritant. Keep it away from eyes and broken skin and wash your hands after handling. Do not use if you have a stomach ulcer, reflux or inflammatory bowel disease. It may add to the effect of anticoagulants and blood-pressure medication.

Reported interactions: Moderate Interaction with Medications that slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs): Capsicum can decelerate blood clotting. Simultaneous taking of Capsicum and antiplatelet medications such as aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others can strengthen the risks of bruising and bleeding. Before using, consult a doctor. Moderate Interaction with Theophylline: Capsicum can enlarge the amount of theophylline the organism can soak. Parallel consumption of capsicum and theophylline can intensify the efficacy as well as undesirable effects of theophylline.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
