A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Rubia cordifolia, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Madder roots supplied the world with red. The dye drawn from this genus coloured British army coats and Turkish carpets, and it supported whole farming districts in France and the Netherlands until 1869, when two German chemists synthesised alizarin and the madder crop collapsed inside a decade — one of the first natural products destroyed by industrial chemistry. The plant is a straggling perennial with whorls of four to six leaves and tiny backward-pointing prickles that let it climb through scrub.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Do not use this for long periods. Rubia roots contain lucidin and related anthraquinones, which are genotoxic in laboratory testing; the related dyer’s madder was withdrawn from sale in Germany for that reason. Keep to short, occasional courses. Not for use in pregnancy. It may colour urine red, which is harmless in itself. It may also add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
