Madder Root (Rubia tinctorum) Dried Root Liquid Extract — External Use Only

For external use only. Not for internal use. This extract is supplied for topical and cosmetic formulation work — oils, balms, salves and soaps. Do not swallow.

A liquid extract of dried root of Rubia tinctorum, prepared for topical and cosmetic formulation — oils, balms, salves and soaps.

What you get

  • One botanical, named to species. Only Rubia tinctorum — the botanical name is printed on the label, so you always know which plant you bought.
  • Cold maceration, never heated. The material steeps at room temperature rather than being boiled or spray-dried.
  • Your choice of base. Organic sugar-cane alcohol, or vegetable glycerin with no ethanol in it.
  • Made for formulators. Blends into an oil, balm or cream base without heating.
  • Made in the USA in an FDA-registered facility.
  • Sizes from 2 fl oz to 2 gallons, including multi-packs — the same extract whether you are testing a formula or running a batch.

About the plant

Madder root turns bones pink. In 1736 John Belchier noticed that pigs fed on madder waste from a calico works had rose-coloured bones, and feeding madder became the standard technique for studying how bone grows and remodels — it stains only what is laid down while the animal is eating it. The plant is a straggling perennial with whorled leaves and hooked prickles; its roots, lifted at three years, gave Europe its red, and Turkey red cloth took a notorious fifteen-step process involving rancid oil to fix it.

Ingredients

Tincture: Rubia tinctorum dried roots, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Rubia tinctorum dried roots, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

For external use in cosmetic and topical preparations. Shake well before use. Blend into a carrier oil, balm, salve, cream or soap base at the rate your formulation calls for. Patch-test on a small area of intact skin and wait 24 hours before wider use.

Warnings

For external use only. Do not take internally. Madder root contains lucidin and related anthraquinones, which are genotoxic in laboratory testing. It is a strong red dye and stains skin, fabric and work surfaces. Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds or near the eyes. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, including on the skin. Not for use on broken skin, open wounds or damaged skin. Discontinue use if irritation, redness or a rash develops. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
