A single-herb liquid extract of dried stigmas of Crocus sativus, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Saffron comes from an autumn-flowering crocus that cannot reproduce itself. It is triploid and sterile, sets no seed, and survives only because people lift and divide its corms; every saffron crocus alive is effectively a clone of a single ancient selection made somewhere in Bronze Age Crete or western Asia. Each flower holds three red stigmas, and they have to be picked by hand at dawn, before the sun opens the flower and starts to degrade them. It takes on the order of a hundred and fifty flowers to make one gram of dried saffron, which settles the question of why it costs what it costs.

Tincture: Crocus sativus dried stigmas, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Crocus sativus dried stigmas, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Do not exceed the suggested amount. Saffron is safe at culinary and supplement levels but toxic in gram quantities, and it is an abortifacient — do not use it during pregnancy. It may add to the effect of antidepressants and blood-pressure medicines.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
