About the plant

Damar is the resin of a Sumatran dipterocarp, tapped by cutting a notch into the trunk and collected as pale yellow lumps every few weeks for decades from the same tree; whole villages in Krui in southern Sumatra manage inherited damar gardens this way. The resin is best known as a picture varnish and as a glazing agent. Two things are worth knowing about this listing: the material is damar, not the Mexican copal that the trade name suggests, and the tree is assessed as Critically Endangered in the wild.

Ingredients

Tincture: Shorea javanica, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Apply a small amount directly to clean, intact skin with a fingertip or a cotton pad. You can also add it to a cream or oil of your own — shake before each use, as the extract does not dissolve in oil. Patch-test on a small area first and wait 24 hours before wider use.

For external use only. Do not take internally. Plant resins can irritate or sensitise the skin: patch-test first, and do not apply to broken skin, open wounds or near the eyes. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
