A single-herb liquid extract of dried herb of Hypericum perforatum, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Hold a leaf of St John's wort up to the light and it is full of small translucent dots, as though it had been peppered with pinpricks; they are oil glands, and they gave the plant the name perforatum. The flowers are bright yellow with five petals and a shock of stamens, and if you crush a bud between your fingers it releases a deep blood-red stain from hypericin. It flowers around midsummer, close enough to St John's Day on the 24th of June to have been named for it, and grows on dry banks and roadsides right across Europe and, as an introduction, much of the rest of the temperate world.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

St John's Wort interacts with more medicines than almost any other herb. It speeds the liver's clearance of many drugs and can make them stop working. Do not use it with hormonal contraceptives, warfarin or other anticoagulants, ciclosporin or other transplant medicines, antiretrovirals, chemotherapy agents, digoxin, or antidepressants including SSRIs — combining it with a serotonergic antidepressant can cause serotonin syndrome. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take any prescription medicine at all. It can also make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
