A single-herb liquid extract of dried herb of Cistanche deserticola, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Cistanche has no chlorophyll and no leaves worth the name. It lives its whole life attached to the roots of saxaul, Haloxylon ammodendron, the shrub that holds the sands of the Gobi and Taklamakan together, and draws everything it needs from its host. What appears above ground is a thick fleshy spike, sometimes a metre tall, sheathed in overlapping scales and topped with pale yellow-purple flowers, pushing up through bare desert sand. The Chinese name is rou cong rong. Decades of wild digging have made it scarce, and most material now comes from farms that plant saxaul first and inoculate the roots.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Cistanche deserticola is listed on CITES Appendix II, so international shipments need the right paperwork; we buy only cultivated material grown on planted saxaul. Not for use in pregnancy.
