Hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata) Tincture, Dried Leaves and Flowers Liquid Extract
A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaves of Crataegus laevigata, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.
What you get
- One herb, named to species. Nothing in the bottle but Crataegus laevigata leaves — the botanical name is printed on the label, so you always know which plant you bought.
- Cold maceration, never heated. The herb steeps at room temperature rather than being boiled or spray-dried, so the volatile and heat-sensitive fractions stay in the liquid.
- Your choice of menstruum. Organic sugar-cane alcohol for a traditional tincture, or a vegetable glycerin extract with no ethanol in it.
- Ethically wild-harvested or sustainably sourced. Wild material is bought from harvesters who work stands on rotation rather than stripping them.
- Nothing else added. No added sugar, no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances. Non-GMO and gluten-free.
- Made in the USA in an FDA-registered facility.
- Sizes from 2 fl oz to 2 gallons, including multi-packs — the same extract whether you are trying it or restocking.
About the plant
This is the leaf and flower of the midland hawthorn rather than the berry — picked together in May, when the blossom is fully out and the new leaves are still soft. Hawthorn flowers white to deep pink in flat clusters and smells, at close range, distinctly odd: the scent contains trimethylamine, the compound of decaying protein, which is exactly what its carrion-fly pollinators are looking for. The leaves are small and shallowly lobed.

Warnings
Hawthorn may add to the effect of cardiac and blood-pressure medication, including digoxin, beta-blockers and nitrates. Speak to your doctor before use if you take any of them.
Reported interactions: Major Interaction with Digoxin (Lanoxin): Digoxin slows and strengthens heart contractions, enabling the heart to pump more blood with each beat. Hawthorn has an impact on the heart as well. Simultaneous consumption of hawthorn and digoxin (Lanoxin) can strengthen the efficacy of digoxin and intensifies the chances of side effects. Do not consume hawthorn together with digoxin (Lanoxin) without doctor’s supervision. Major Interaction with Medications for high blood pressure (Beta-blockers): Hawthorn can lower blood pressure. Parallel using hawthorn with such Beta-blockers as atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal), and others can lower your blood pressure to life-threatening level. Major Interaction with Medications for high blood pressure (Calcium channel blockers): Hawthorn can lower blood pressure. Parallel using hawthorn with such Calcium channel blockers as nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, Verelan), diltiazem (Cardizem), isradipine (DynaCirc), felodipine (Plendil), amlodipine (Norvasc), and others can lower your blood pressure to life-threatening level. Major Interaction with Medications for male sexual dysfunction (Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors): Hawthorn can lower blood pressure as well as some medications for male sexual dysfunction. Contemporary taking of hawthorn and such Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra) can lower your blood pressure to life-threatening level. Major Interaction with Medications that increase blood flow to the heart (Nitrates): Hawthorn intensifies blood flow. Parallel taking hawthorn with Nitrates such as nitroglycerin (Nitro-Bid, Nitro-Dur, Nitrostat) and isosorbide (Imdur, Isordil, Sorbitrate) can enlarge the risks of dizziness and lightheadedness.
