A single-herb liquid extract of dried herb of Galium odoratum, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Sweet woodruff has no scent at all while it is growing. Cut it and leave it to wilt and within an hour the room smells of new-mown hay and vanilla, because coumarin locked up in the living cells is released as they break down. That is the whole basis of its old use as a strewing herb and of German Maiwein, in which wilted sprigs are steeped in white wine on the first of May. The plant is a low woodland creeper with narrow leaves set in ruffs around the stem.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Sweet woodruff is a coumarin plant. Its scent is coumarin, and in quantity or over long periods coumarin is hard on the liver; German food law caps how much woodruff may go into a drink for exactly this reason. Keep to occasional or short-term use, avoid it if you have liver disease, and do not use it alongside anticoagulant medicines. Not for use in pregnancy.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
