A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Scrophularia ningpoensis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Xuan shen is a figwort: a tall square-stemmed perennial of central China carrying loose sprays of small helmet-shaped flowers in a dull green-purple that is easy to walk past. The root is the point. It is fleshy and pale when lifted, and it blackens as it dries and is repeatedly sweated, which is what xuan — dark — refers to. Finished slices are almost black, slightly translucent and sticky.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Not for use in pregnancy. Scrophularia contains compounds with a mild action on the heart; take advice first if you have a heart condition or take digoxin or other cardiac medication. It may also lower blood sugar.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
