A single-herb liquid extract of dried immature fruit of Citrus × aurantium, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Zhi shi is the immature fruit of the bitter orange, collected in May and June when the small green fruits fall naturally from the tree or are picked at no more than two or three centimetres across, then sliced in half and dried. Cut across, a piece shows a thick pale rind, a ring of oil glands and a shrivelled centre. It is more sharply bitter and more aromatic than the mature peel, which is a separate article.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Bitter orange contains synephrine, which can raise heart rate and blood pressure. Do not use if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, do not combine it with stimulants or caffeine, and do not use it in pregnancy. It also blocks the enzyme that clears many medicines, in the same way grapefruit does.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
