Arnica (Arnica montana) Dried Flower Liquid Extract — External Use Only

For external use only. Not for internal use. This extract is supplied for topical and cosmetic formulation work — oils, balms, salves, soaps and compresses. Do not swallow.

A liquid extract of dried Arnica montana flower heads, prepared for topical formulation — creams, balms, oils and compresses.

What you get

  • One botanical, named to species. Only Arnica montana flower heads — not the North American A. chamissonis that is often substituted for it.
  • Flower heads only, picked in full bloom, which is the part European pharmacopoeias specify.
  • Cold maceration, never heated. The material steeps at room temperature rather than being boiled or spray-dried.
  • Made for formulators. Blends into an oil, balm or cream base without heating.
  • Made in the USA in an FDA-registered facility.
  • Sizes from 2 fl oz to 2 gallons, including multi-packs — the same extract whether you are testing a formula or running a batch.

About the plant

Arnica is a mountain daisy of the acid alpine meadows of central and southern Europe, from the Pyrenees through the Alps and Carpathians, growing between about a thousand and two and a half thousand metres. It makes a flat rosette of oval downy leaves and sends up an almost leafless stem carrying one, sometimes three, shaggy golden-orange flower heads whose ray florets are untidily notched at the tips as if they had been torn. It is fussy: it needs poor, acid, unfertilised soil, which is exactly the kind of pasture that agricultural improvement has removed, and it is now protected across much of its range and grown on contract in Romania, Spain and the Vosges for the trade.

Suggested use

For external use in cosmetic and topical preparations. Blend into a carrier oil, balm, salve, cream or soap base at the rate your formulation calls for. Patch-test on a small area of intact skin and wait 24 hours before wider use.

Warnings

For external use only. Do not take internally. Arnica taken by mouth causes severe irritation of the digestive tract, and larger amounts affect the heart; the only internal preparations that are safe are homeopathic dilutions, and this is not one. Not for use on broken skin, open wounds, eczema or any damaged skin. Prolonged or repeated application can itself cause dermatitis. People allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or other Asteraceae frequently react to arnica — patch-test first. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, including on the skin. Not for use on broken skin, open wounds or damaged skin. Discontinue use if irritation, redness or a rash develops. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
