A single-herb liquid extract of dried fruits of Ligustrum lucidum, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Glossy privet is a broad evergreen tree of China and Korea, with leathery leaves that flash in the light and big loose panicles of small cream flowers in midsummer whose scent carries a long way. The fruit is an oval blue-black drupe with a bloom on it, ripening in late autumn and hanging on the tree through winter, and that winter fruit is the part gathered — nu zhen zi. The species is also the tree on which the scale insect that yields Chinese insect wax is farmed. Planted widely as a street tree, it has become invasive in the southern United States, Australia and Argentina.

Glycerite: Ligustrum lucidum dried fruits, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Privet fruit and leaves contain irritant glycosides, and swallowed privet berries are a well-documented cause of stomach upset and vomiting in children — keep this well out of their reach. Take it in modest amounts and stop use if it upsets your stomach.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
