A single-herb liquid extract of dried seed of Citrus × paradisi, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

The grapefruit is a young plant by citrus standards: a chance hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange that appeared in Barbados in the eighteenth century and was first described as the "forbidden fruit" before a Jamaican planter renamed it for the way it hangs in grape-like clusters. The seeds are the flat pale kernels inside the segments, and they carry the most concentrated bitterness in the fruit — limonoids and naringin, the same compounds that give the flesh its edge, in far greater density. Note that this is a plain seed extract and nothing else. Much of what is sold as "grapefruit seed extract" has been found on analysis to owe its properties to added synthetic preservatives rather than to the seed; there are none in this bottle.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Grapefruit blocks an enzyme the body uses to clear many medicines, which can push blood levels of those drugs dangerously high. Do not use it with statins, calcium-channel blockers, ciclosporin, certain benzodiazepines or antiarrhythmics without asking a pharmacist first — the interaction is well documented and it matters.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
