A single-herb liquid extract of dried bark of Pausinystalia johimbe, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Yohimbe is a tall evergreen of the West African lowland rainforest, reaching thirty metres in Cameroon, Gabon and southern Nigeria, with large glossy leaves in whorls of three and small clustered flowers. Only the bark is traded: thick, greyish, fissured, and stripped in long sheets. Because a tree is usually felled to take it, wild-harvest pressure on the species is a live conservation question in Cameroon, and the material we buy comes from managed sources. The accepted botanical name is Pausinystalia johimbe; the spelling with a y is the trade name and appears on most labels.

Glycerite: Pausinystalia johimbe dried bark, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Yohimbe bark contains yohimbine, a potent alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist, and it is one of the riskiest botanicals sold in the United States. Reported adverse events include dangerously high blood pressure, rapid or irregular heartbeat, seizures, kidney failure, heart attack and death. Do not use if you have high or low blood pressure, heart disease, chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, kidney or liver disease, a thyroid disorder, diabetes, a seizure disorder, a stomach ulcer, an anxiety disorder, panic attacks, PTSD, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Do not combine with MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, blood-pressure medication, stimulants including caffeine and phenylephrine, or with alcohol. Not for use by anyone under 18, by women, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Start well below the suggested amount, never exceed it, and stop immediately if you feel your heart racing, become anxious or agitated, or feel unwell in any way. Consult your doctor before you take this at all.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
