A single-herb liquid extract of dried roots of Urtica dioica, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

This is the root rather than the leaf, and it is a different article. Nettle spreads underground by a mat of wiry yellow rhizomes that run just below the surface and send up new shoots along their length, which is why a nettle patch is usually one plant and why pulling the tops does nothing. The roots are lifted in autumn, washed free of soil, and dried. They have none of the sting and none of the green grassy character of the leaf.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Reported interactions: Moderate Interaction with Lithium: Stinging nettle has a diuretic effect. Its consumption has an impact on the process of getting rid of the lithium from the body. The lithium quantity can become greater and leads to high-priority side effects. Consult a doctor, perhaps you will need to change a dosage of lithium. Moderate Interaction with Medications for diabetes (Antidiabetes drugs): Stinging nettle has an effect of reducing blood sugar level of the body as well as Antidiabetes drugs. Diabetes medications such as glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others, have decreasing blood sugar properties. Thereby contemporaneous using of stinging nettle and listed medications can decrease your blood sugar to the life-threatening rate. Observe the level of blood sugar vigilantly. First, consult a doctor, perhaps the dosage of your diabetes medications need to be altered. Moderate Interaction with Medications for high blood pressure (Antihypertensive drugs): Stinging nettle can lower blood pressure. Parallel using stinging nettle with such Antihypertensive drugs as captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others can lower your blood pressure to life-threatening level. Moderate Interaction with Sedative medications (CNS depressants): Stinging nettle as well as sedative medications can cause tiredness and somnolence. Concurrent using of the stinging nettle and sedative medications such as clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others can be the reason of a strong feeling of sleepiness. Do not use this combination. Moderate Interaction with Warfarin (Coumadin): Stinging nettle includes a huge quantity of vitamin K. Vitamin K is known as the clotting vitamin, because without it, blood would not clot. Warfarin (Coumadin) has a property to reduce blood clotting. As a result of having influence on the blood clot, stinging nettle can lessen the efficacy of warfarin (Coumadin). Observe your blood vigilantly. Perhaps the dosage of your warfarin (Coumadin) medications needs to be altered.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
