A single-herb liquid extract of dried bark of Ulmus rubra, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Slippery elm is a medium-sized elm of eastern North American woodland, and the useful part is the inner bark, not the rough outer bark. Strip it and the layer beneath is fibrous, pale, and so full of mucilage that it turns slick and gelatinous the moment it meets water. That property made it a wrapping for food and a lining for canoes long before anything else. It has to be taken from felled or thinned trees rather than standing ones — girdling kills an elm — and since Dutch elm disease reduced the standing population, careful sourcing matters more than it used to.

Glycerite: Ulmus rubra dried bark, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

If you take any medication, leave a gap of at least two hours either side of a mucilage herb such as this one, which can slow absorption. Not for use if you have a bowel obstruction.

If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
