A single-herb liquid extract of dried root of Althaea officinalis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Marshmallow is a tall grey-green perennial of brackish ditches, sea walls and the upper edges of salt marsh around European coasts, softly velvety over the whole plant, with pale pink five-petalled flowers in the leaf axils. Every part of it is loaded with mucilage and the root most of all: dig one and it is white, fibrous and slippery to the touch. The confectionery took its name from this plant because it was once genuinely made from it — the root boiled with sugar and beaten with egg white into a soft paste. Nothing in a modern marshmallow has been anywhere near the plant.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Leave a gap of at least two hours either side of any medication — the mucilage in marshmallow root can slow how much of a drug the body absorbs.

Reported interactions: Moderate Interaction with Lithium: Marshmallow has a diuretic effect on the body. Its consumption has an impact on the process of getting rid of the lithium from the body. The lithium quantity can become greater and leads to high-priority side effects. Consult a doctor, perhaps you will need to change a dosage of lithium. Moderate Interaction with Medications for diabetes (Antidiabetes drugs): Marshmallow has an effect of reducing blood sugar level of the body. Antidiabetes drugs such as glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others have decreasing pressure properties as well. Thereby contemporaneous using of marshmallow and listed medications can decrease your blood sugar to the life-threatening rate. Observe the level of blood sugar vigilantly. Consult a doctor, perhaps the dosage of your diabetes medications need to be altered. Moderate Interaction with Medications taken by mouth (Oral drugs): Marshmallow includes mucilage. Mucilage can reduce drug absorbability in the body. Concurrent consumption of marshmallow and Oral drugs can reduce the amount of absorbed medications, and lower the efficacy of your Oral drugs. In order to avoid this interaction, consume marshmallow no less than one hour after oral drugs.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
